St. James Roman Catholic Church, Penns Grove, NJ
The first Catholic mass was held offered in Penns Grove on June 14, 1898. Held in
the home of Thomas Durr on Pitman St,  services were held irregularly until it
became evident a larger place of worship was needed. At this time these services
were moved to Turner Hall on Harmony St and held twice a month. On May 1, 1901
the congregation was incorporated at St. James Church and a building was erected
on N.Broad St. This building was dedicated on November 28, 1901. With the advent
of World War I, the little church could not accommodate the crowds who came to
hear mass. Land was purchased on the corner of State St. and Beach Ave. where
a building was erected to contain both a church and a school. The cornerstone for
this building was laid on July 25, 1920.The School opened in 1921, staffed by the
Sister, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and, in 1927, by the Sisters of St.
Joseph of Peace. The high school originally opened within the pastorate of Father
John Welsh (1928-1934).
Father (later Monsignor) Henry A. Faber became pastor in November 1934 and
remained in that post for 32 years. Under his direction, the new St. James High
School  was built on Georgetown Road in Carneys Point. In 2001, both St. James
High School and St. James Grammar School were closed. The building on
Georgetown Road was converted for use as a grammar school and reopened
September of 2001 as The Bishop Guilfoyle School.
Two parishes were formed from the St. James Parish area, Queen of Apostles in
Pennsville, in 1955 and Corpus Christi in Carneys Point in 1966.
